Latin Small Letter O with Stroke Symbol ø

The Danish, Norwegian, Faroese, and Southern Sámi languages use the letter Ø, or the tiny ø. With the exception of Southern Sámi, where it is used as a [oe] diphthong, it is primarily used to represent mid front rounded vowels, such as [ø] (listen) and [œ] (listen).

This letter's name corresponds to the sound it represents (see usage). Typographers who speak English may refer to this symbol as a "o with stroke" or a "slashed O". Its names imply that it is a diacritical or ligature variant of the letter o, but in Danish and Norwegian, it is regarded as a distinct letter and is alphabetized after "z" - x, y, z, ae, ø, and å.

"ø" can be accurately substituted with the digraph "oe" in languages that lack the letter or in character sets that are restricted, like ASCII. However, in everyday usage, this is frequently done with just a "o," as in email addresses. It is comparable to the Swedish (and many other language) letter "ö" and can also be substituted with it. This was frequently the case with older typewriters in Denmark and Norway, as well as in national variations of International Morse Code.

The International Phonetic Alphabet also uses "ø" (minuscule) to denote a close-mid front rounded vowel.
