Euro-Currency Sign Symbol ₠
The European Currency Unit, also known as the ECU or XEU, was a monetary unit that was used by the European Economic Community. It was made up of a basket of the currencies of the member nations. The ECU was given the ISO 4217 code and went into operation on March 13 of that year. On January 1st, 1979, the ECU replaced the European Unit of Account (EUA) at parity, and on January 1st, 1999, the euro (EUR) did the same.
The ECU was not a circulating currency and did not replace or supersede the value of the currencies of EEC member nations when used as a unit of account. However, it was applied to the pricing of some capital transfers and international financial transactions.
